Restoration and Conservation of Priority Areas of Caatinga’s Semi-Arid Forest Remnants Can Support Connectivity within an Agricultural Landscape

چکیده
Land-use and land-cover (LULC) changes are major drivers of biodiversity loss in semi-arid regions, such as the Caatinga biome located Northeast Brazil. We investigated landscape dynamics fragmentation an area São Francisco Valley Brazilian measured effect these on ecological, functional structural connectivity over a 33-year period (1985–2018). calculated indices based graph theory to quantify further agricultural expansion ecological at scale. used multicriteria decision analysis that integrates graph-based habitat patch scale, combined with index human disturbance identify patches that, if conserved restored, preserve most effectively. In studied, agriculture increased rate 2104 ha/year, while native vegetation decreased 5203 ha/year. Both dense open became more fragmented, number fragments increasing by 85.2% 28.6%, respectively, whilst average fragment size 84.8% 6.1% for Caatinga, respectively. If were expand 300 m buffer around each patch, overall could be reduced 6–15%, depending species’ (small- mid-size terrestrial vertebrates) mobility characteristics which calculated. provided explicit spatial information conservation restoration studied area. This helps planning this rapidly changing ecosystem.

Threats from urban expansion, agricultural transformation and forest loss on global conservation priority areas
Including threats in spatial conservation prioritization helps identify areas for conservation actions where biodiversity is at imminent risk of extinction. At the global level, an important limitation when identifying spatial priorities for conservation actions is the lack of information on the spatial distribution of threats. Here, we identify spatial conservation priorities under three promi...
متن کاملSimulation of the catchments hydrological processes in arid, semi-arid and semi-humid areas
Hydrological processes and their spatial distribution directly are relevant to climate, topography, geology, and land use in the watershed. Therefore, use of a model whit integrity and high performance for simulating the process in deferent watersheds is very important. In this study was assessment performance of semi-distributed SWAT model in simulating hydrology processes in three watersheds ...
متن کاملThe Landscape as a Unit for Rangeland Inventory in Arid and Semi-arid Regions of Iran
Severe range degradation was critically extended in many region of Iran and caused many rangelands were restricted and interwoven with croplands in a complex system. Therefore, rangeland planning and inventory as an isolated activity has become almost impossible. Current landscape planning involves contributions of different social organizations often with different interests and with different...
متن کاملThe restoration and protection of the swampy meadow within an agricultural landscape
This paper addresses some implications our limited understanding of the swampy meadow landform has on agricultural production and sustainable water management. The ecological and hydrological consequences of current water management practices have lead to a revaluation of natural approaches as an alternative to instream engineering solutions. One such approach would be the restoration/rehabilit...
